A really informative book is Dr. John Lee's "What your Doctor won't tell you about Menopause"; he also has one for Pre-menopause. Either way, he has compounded a natural progesterone cream that is available from his site. The only problems I had during Menopause was not being able to sleep, now I sleep like a baby! There are many such creams out there, but he describes the right one, which he has compounded and his wife continues to sell after his death. It's worth a try and a good read!

Hello YHR
Thank you for your article, “A New Pathway for Menopause - Part 1.
Your comment, “Plant estrogens are different from the steroidal estrogens…” made me ask my pharmacist for some more specific information. She explained to me that the Estriol and the Estradiol that I am currently using (in a cream) is derived from yam and/or soy and that this steroid hormone, which is bio-identical, are natural to humans, and is not from an animal (as you have kindly pointed out, "that doctors normally prescribe such as Premarin, from pregnant mares”). My concern is that God has said to us what is food to eat, and among the animals, God has said what is clean and what is unclean. What I put into my body is important to me. I believe that I am following God and, as I understand my pharmacist, I am not in violation of the Word (as I see it). If you see that I am going in the wrong direction according to the Word, please advise me because I always endeavor to follow His Word. Thank you.

Dear April, I truly believe in the bio-identical hormones. In fact, I am in the process of changing doctors because mine is so set in her ways and doesn't believe in saliva tests. She is so close -minded that anything new just sets her off. If your doctor isn't open-minded and aware of bio-identicals, you should find one who is. I'll be doing bio-identicals until the day I die. They are made from what God created. I can't believe God would want us to ingest horse urine.

Hello all--I'm new to this site, don't know anything about bioidentical (creams?) Are they prescription only?
I'm 59, soooo tired all the time, wake up during the night (no night sweats tho) Prob. anxiety-ridden:) almost depression, I've tried taking B complex for tiredness, but they gave me such heartburn/stomach pain for 3 days, no more for me. I have IBS, so any vitamin pills cause problems!! I've given up on them. Also, my hair has been noticeably thinning in front just in the last 6 months:(
Any ideas, suggestions appreciated!! Thanks June

Dear June,I am familiar with some of the same problems you are having. I would suggest the first thing you do is have thyroid testing done. Thyroid imbalance can cause these same problems. An endocrinologist is your best bet. After that find a good gynecologist who works with bio-identical hormones. Good Luck!

Hello. I'm 54. I stopped having a period for 15 months, then had one last October. I've taken care of myself, since my early 30,s by eating healthy and getting regular exercise. I've always been healthy and felt well. After a bout with hot flashes in my late 40's and declining energy, I started taking bio-identical progesterone cream two years ago. I felt well until probably the past several months. Seems everything began going downhill. I'm gaining weight around the middle (I've always had a small waist), I don't have the energy to run (I've run races including distance races - half marathons - since my 40's). In the past several weeks, in spite of taking 2000 i.u.'s of vit D, I've had such achy joints that I can't function past 3pm or so. I get bloated no matter what I eat. I'm generally feeling awful. I suspect that my estrogen is bottoming out. I hesitate to go to my regular doctor. He's not been trained in nutrition (is opposed to using supplements) and I don't want him telling me to take "fake" estrogen. The probem with going to a naturalpath doctor (at least those in this area) is that they don't take insurance. Can I get any help without paying "out-of-pocket"?

I maintained fairly comfortably on just progesterone, initially, then needed the addition of bio-identical estrogen (estradiol?)a few years later. Also, you may be suffering some symptoms from too much progesterone in your system.... You really need to get a saliva profile done through ZRT Labs or another reputable group to see what's going on in your system. I guarantee it will shed much needed light on your symptoms. Whoever's been prescribing your bio-identical progesterone should be open to prescribing a saliva profile and follow up prescriptions based on the results of the profile. If not, a compounding pharmacy in your area may be able to recommend an MD who would, which should put it under your insurance. Good luck!

I am new to this site. I am 52 and in November was taken off my low-dose birth control pills. Doctor said he was sure I was menopausal and should more than likely be taken off the pill. I had been on them since middle 20's I'm sure. He did blood test and my FSH was 97 (I understand anything over 15 is menopausal!!). My estriadol was 25 (not sure what the normals are?). Consequently, I went to my endocrinologist who monitors my thyroid (as I have a hot nodule on my thyroid which he said was only a 1% chance it was malignent and pretty common). Each time I go, my thyroid levels are fine according to him and he tests it anually to make sure it has not grown too much. I took my GYN blood test results to him since hormones and thyroid are connected and asked his thoughts. He said, according to the "experts" even as of the week before, if your symptoms are "tolerable", not to take anything. I asked if he was going to test any other hormone when he tested for my thyroid and he said "no".....this was your levels according to your GYN and your menopausal and don't ever need to be tested again. I would like to know what my testosterone and progestin levels are?? And, if I would need bios to regulate anything. I go to male GYN and understand there is a female @ same office who possibly believes in the BIOs and prescribing something those those of us that might need something. About 7 years ago I went thru a period of night sweats that lasted approx. 6 months. It was horrible. Guess that was my perimenopause. I was so glad when they quit. Every now and then, I may wake up a little sweaty but not like before. I just have hot flashes (somewhat tolerable) and hate it when I have to fan while conversing with someone!! Also, my ENDO wanted me to undergo bone density test. He said my spine was good, but I had osteopenia of the hip and that concerned him since my GYN took me off the birth control. It's funny, because a couple of months after getting off the pill, my left hip started to give me problems.....feels like sharp pain sometimes when I walk. I used to be able to walk just fine until now. I am healthy and work out too! I find it strange that started after being taken off the pill. Also, I've noticed more new, short gray hairs popping up in my scalp. I feel as though without the hormones I'm changing before my eyes and it bothers me. I hear people on the hormones feel so young again. Not that I feel old, but just some of the symptoms worry me. I guess I just need to go to the female GYN and get second opinion. My present GYN said if I had any symptoms he would not treat it with a pill as it would be to strong.....wonder what he trests it with....cream?? I may call his nurse just to see what they would recommend and go from there and explain about my diagnosis of osteopenia. I don't want to have to take something for that for the rest of my life....it can also have risks just like hormones. At least the hormones would resolve my hot flashes!! WHEW. Sorry to be so long, but just grasping for some answers! Thanks for listening!

I would recommend reading this blog's comments, then going to links mentioned. Bio-identical hormones could help with your osteopenia, PLUS, make sure you're taking adequate calcium AND magnesium, daily. Also, I would recommend a DEXA-scan for bone density. It is currently considered the gold standard for bone density by most professionals, from what I've researched. I was treated for severe osteoporosis for years, based on another type of scan my doctor preferred, which also had much higher radiation exposure involved (think it was a QCT scan). Once I insisted upon a dexa-scan, I was found to NOT have severe osteoporosis at all, but osteopenia, like you. After years of fearing my bones were like glass ready to shatter, it was a gift from God. Also, the prescription drugs given for osteoporosis have some nasty long-term effects, based on studies. I never took them, despite doctors insisting, for years. I'm a difficult patient, to be sure. I've been told "you read too much," by my MD.... However, it's my body and I'm the one who lives with the advantages or consequences of medications. Dr Cherry's advocation of looking to God for the answers and in things he's already provided for us, makes good sense to me. Weight-bearing exercises are a plus, for helping strengthen the bones, in case you're not already doing them. Overweight women tend to have a lower incidence of osteoporosis because their bones are basically doing "weight-bearing" exercises during daily activities. Thin women pay the price of higher rates of osteoporosis... So, it's tempting to pass the chocolate bars! Good luck with your quest for healing. I think you'll find some good advice on this site. May God guide you to where he wants you to be, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. He loves you!

Hi Sandra, I did a quick search for "compounding pharmacy" + Maine and got: Kennebec Pharmacy @ 1-888-463-8083. I would call their toll free # and tell them you're interested in bio-identical hormones and can they recommend a Maine doctor who works with them. More internet searching might yield many more compounding pharmacies in your area. If you were interested in going through Bellevue Pharmacy, THEY may well have tabs on a doctor in your area that prescribes bio-identical hormones. If not, they are willing to talk to your regular MD about their recommendations and request a prescription for you. If you go armed to your regular MD with copies of your written reports from ZRT Labs and Belluvue, I think it would be hard for many MDs to refuse to assist with an okay. However, there are some who would not. I spent a few years trying to argue the merits of saliva testing vs conventional blood testing, to no avail. My doctor was set in believing that the conventional blood tests would precisely measure any hormonal imbalance. His nurse was so impressed with my ZRT analysis that she was going to pursue saliva testing and bioidentical hormones, also. She had long witnessed the hazards of conventional hormones (pregnant mare urine, etc) and the link with breast cancer, etc. After I horsewhipped my GP (just kidding) to cooperate with prescriptions for tests and the bio-identicals, I found out that the nurse practitioner that I go to for annual pelvic/breast exams was a big proponent of bio-identical hormones (uses them herself, as does her spouse)and regularly referred patients to local compounder, who keeps saliva test kits in stock for ZRT Labs. The pharmacy mails the used kit, then get results from ZRT directly, and compounds prescriptions recommended by Dr Zava. I like getting my kits from ZRT direct because then I get the results, directly, which I can then give to pharmacy. I'm always VERY anxious to see my latest hormonal "report card." I started out with annual saliva tests, but have gotten more lax as my symptoms have lessened (due to the bio-identicals). Your body will let you know when you're on-track or not. Best Wishes to you, Sandra!

Started out fending off imbalances for a few years with wild yam creams, then...I needed more. Been using bio-identical hormones for several years now.... They have been a God-send for me, yet safe. Saliva testing thru ZRT Labs (Dr David Zava) provides extensive and very detailed analysis of what's lacking, ample, and/or in excess in my system. Dr Zava (a published author) is a virtual encyclopedia on causes/effects/remedies for hormonal imbalance and gives you his recommendations. Bellevue Pharmacy (Pete Husemann) provided my bio-identicals for several years. I only recently began getting some refills from a local compounding pharmacy, only because I tend to wait til the last minute for refills.... Dr Zava/ZRT and Pete Husemann/Bellevue team-tagged to get my daughter (in her 20's) straightened out from horrible hormonal imbalances that were absolutely wrecking her young life....extreme hair loss/weight gain/extreme moods, etc. She will always be grateful to both of them, as will I! I do not concur with Suzanne Somers advocation of opting for periods again, via bio-identicals. I do not miss having them and have read a lot, heard a lot, against that option. We weren't made to keep having periods in the 60's and beyond and that certainly works for me. I just wanted relief from horrible nightsweats and day/night hot flashes that were making life very miserable. GP prescribed Zoloft for hot flashes. Didn't work for me. I have had nothing but GOOD side effects from my bio-identical hormones as assessed/determined by Dr Zava & Pete Husemann.... The hormones are pretty pricey at first, but once your system gets settled down a bit, you can stretch them out much further. What I used to use to combat symptoms in a week, now lasts me a month. Hopes this helps someone! John W Lee, MD is another good author to refer to about pre-menopause and menopause. Also, MEN SUFFER FROM HORMONAL IMBALANCES TOO....expecially in 40's and beyond. Dr Zava pegged my husband's imbalances and symptoms to a "t." Bio-identicals had him feeling much better very quickly.

Hi Jane, You can go to zrtlab.com and get a saliva test kit sent to your home, which you then return via mail. They also have bloodspot testing available in a home kit, but the saliva test kits have always been right on target for me, my husband, and my youngest daughter, as far as imbalances, recommendations, and then, results based on Dr Zava's recommendations. He typically surveys all test results and will add a written summary/recommendation on your test results. There are a lot of helps via the site to help you decide which hormones you might need to get checked. I would recommend the full female panel test kit, initially, if possible. Insurance has paid for my saliva tests, previously, IF ordered by your doctor. Keep in mind, my GP knew NOTHING about bio-identical hormones and is anti-alternative medicines, generally. However, I wrote down exactly what I wanted to be tested for via the saliva test (after going through the ZRT site helps/symptom checkers) and took it to him and asked for a prescription for same, in order to get insurance coverage. I did the same in order to get the recommended prescriptions (as per Dr Zava) filled by Bellevue Pharmacy (with Pete Husemann) after an initial consult (which is free is you get your initial prescriptions from them). ZRT and Bellevue are wonderful to get you on-track, and quickly. If your hormones are really topsy turvy, you will likely begin feeling better within days and really improved within a month. Dr Zava co-wrote with the late Dr John Lee, and has some other publications. Pete Husemann at Bellevue has helped thousands of women via the power-surge.com site, the Bellevue site, and through his initial workups and follow through on hormones. You can get saliva testing done through Bellevue, but I have ALWAYS gone through ZRT, instead, due to my well-founded trust and respect in Dr Zava. You just send Bellevue (or another compounding pharmacist) your ZRT results and they will take it from there. If you're having a terrible time, hormonally, hang in there........there IS hope!!! If you can only get your estrogen and progesterone levels checked, that will at least get you a great start. I wouldn't worry so much about cortisol levels, initially. The biggies are generally going to be estrogen and progesterone. Testosterone can also be a factor (yes, in females) if too low OR too high. I hope you will get wonderful relief SOON!

Hello! Thanks for your reply and information!
I am almost 44 and have been on a roller coaster for 2 years..going to 3...soon to be four Doctors..here in the Kansas City area...2 years ago I was diagnosed with low thyroid and given a script for synthroid..this Doc did not consent to me having a hormone panel done..she just tested my blood there in office...she said there was nothing more to check? that.. I didnt need a panel done if I was still having periods....anyway...I left there and did not fill the script....I wanted more than that....so..I did reasearch on everything thyroid..and the drugs...and found a new Doc....that would do a panel..and she did prescribe armour....the thyroid was off a bit..as was testosterone...so she started me on injections....est. test...and a progest. cream......along with armour and cortisol......within a few days I was having a reaction to the armour and I didnt feel right...I was flushed...I felt dizzy...my blood sugar dropped....and the cortisol....it made me break out in large bruises.....so...I called the Doctor....it had been about a week....and she said that I should increase the dose of armour? I said..no way...if I feel like this I am not taking it....so I weaned myself off everything......and didnt go back.....and I began taking a natural supplement for the thyroid...and some iodine...I have been doing this for a year...and I am feeling alot better...the brain fog..the depression.. its gone.....I just had my thyroid checked last week...at the Obgyn...they said I am in normal range...and to keep doing what Im doing?
anyway....I have another appt. with yet another new Doc...that does the Bios....and I am still getting another panel done next week...I have read many things about the thyroid...and if 1 hormone is off then others are off...and progesterone defiency..I have read can effect thyroid production.....I did feel better doing the progest. cream..so, I want to see if I still need that. also...the Armour....it made my period stop for that entire month..I knew something wasnt right....We have to listen to our bodies....and our gut feelings....and do research before we put any substances in our bodies.....because, if I would have just listened to the first Doctor? I would be on a drug that I didnt need for the rest of my life.....I always want to know the how and why of things.......and how to fix it if possible......2 years ago....I had alot of stress and had just lost my Mom.....and my adrenals and thyroid were tired and sluggish....and alot of these Docs dont want to help find the why? they just want to hand you a RX...I know that there are lifesaving drugs out there...and people that need them.....but sometimes our bodies just need to rest and have the right nutrients, vitamins and minerals and some of these things can turn around.....I am able to exercise again....I was so tired and drained last year I couldnt...
so...I feel that I am on my own pathway to healing...
Thanks again, for your info.....I have also been on the Bellevue site..and some of the others...these days I read everything I can get my hands on...I think I will consider getting saliva tests done as well.....so far I have only had blood work done at quest..because my Ins. will pay.

Hi again, Jane- You have REALLY been through some rough times in the last few years!!! I am so sorry you've had to struggle with the traditional medical system... Traditional MD's do not seem open to any unreliability in thyroid or hormone test results, via regular bloodwork screens. With the trouble you've had with thyroid, I would highly recommend you become acquainted with the written works of Dr Broda Barnes. He was a medical doctor that spent most of his adult years researching the thyroid gland and it's effects on the body. He spoke of how low thyroid typically/often would not show up on traditional bloodwork. Dr Barnes said the best way to check for low thyroid was to take your temperature, under your arm, before getting out of bed in the mornings, for a few days in a row. He gives the ranges which denotes true low thyroid. I wish every physician would read Dr Barnes' work on thyroid. So many are put on medicine, with horrible results (like you). Your thyroid is a regulator, which, when out of kilter, too low or too high, can be a real nightmare. It is a real juggling act to get the dosage correct, and many physicians do not want to take the time/effort to monitor patient results/symptoms during the initial phases of medication. I'm glad you have been so resourceful to study up to help yourself. It's sad that is necessary nowadays, but high patient loads and short office visits seem to mandate self-study. It's very difficult for a non-medical person to delve into study, but it's really the prudent thing to do. No one will try to protect your health like you. While I feel God expects us to help ourselves as much as possible, there are many times it is beyond us to do so. Always remember He (Jesus) is the great physician. The Lord made you and knows everything that is wrong or right in your body/soul/mind, at all times. Always seek His healing as you journey towards wellness. I cannot tell you how many times the Lord has healed me. It's easy to get wrapped up in trying to do things ourselves, instead of letting God drive. He always cares. He WANTS to be a part of our daily lives and our little problems, as well as the big ones. So, ask Him for the little things you need. If they concern you, they concern Him. He loves you enough to have your name written on the palms of His hands. Have a wonderful day, Jane, and know that you are loved by the best.... May Jesus hold you in His arms of love this day.

Cland,
I have been taking bio-identicals since January 2008. I had such a drop in all of my hormones that I ended up in the emergency room and they thought I had a heart attack. However, the end result was that all of my hormones were bottomed out. My doctor wrote a RX for them and I went to my compounding pharmacist. I felt so much better however it actually took an entire year of tweaking until I hit "normal" levels for me. I finally feel like myself again. My quality of life greatly improved. All of my symptoms of up and down moods, heart palpitations, insomnia, lethargy, erratic periods, hot flashes, anxiety, etc etc are GONE! There is no amount of money that I would not pay for them. It has made me feel like I am in my twenties again. I think my hormones must have been out of wack for a while and then perimenopause slammed me. I highly recommend them and if you are having severe symptoms like I was...there is hope at the end of the tunnel. Do not believe it when someone tries to tell you this is just the way it is at this time in your life (I am 51). Bio-identical hormones gave me my life back and I have never felt better!!! I thank God for this life saving medicine.

Hello cland,
Yes, I've just started using Bio-identical hormones. I started out years ago with natural progesterone injections. It took me out of a pit of depression into the sunshine in just twenty minutes after my first injection by the Doctor. I did this as long as I could stand it until I heard about natural hormone cream by another Doctor I found on Christian T.V. This carried me through until recently when I found a Clinical/Compounding Pharmacist here in my home town who added Estriol and Estradiol to the mix because I could not find a remedy for my hot flashes, which were very extreme, with only the progesterone. She also gave me a lengthy explanation of Bio-identical hormones which now I understand is more identical to the human body than even things that were considered natural. This new stuff that I have is measured out exactly so I believe it will be easier to control as I'm figuring out the effects. I did really well the first week or so. I think we (this is a team effort between me, my Pharmacist and my Doctor) need to do some tweaking now.
What is the Estriol you are using? Is it a natural based hormone too? I know as we get older our bodies don't make a lot of the hormones they use to when we were younger.I'm trying to collect as much information as I can so when I talk to a Dr. and try to explain what I'm going through I will not be so uninformed about it.
I'm suffering from lack of sleep because of hot flashes in the middle of the night. I get one and wake up, and stay a wake for 2 or 3 hrs. I can't function anymore, please give me more information so I can start sleeping like a normal person again.

Hello Sherrie,
The Estriol and Estradiol are in a cream that I rub on and they are both bio-identical.
(These are in addition to the progesterone cream, also bio-identical, that I have been on for years. The progesterone has helped me out of a depression and mood swings.)
I haven't completely gotten over my hot flashes yet, I'm still in the tweeking faze. Recently I submitted sliva for testing and I understand it will take a couple of weeks to get results. My Clinical/Compounding Pharmacist is the one who has informed me about bio-identical hormones. I am following her advice as she keeps in touch with my Doctor.
Hi April,
Thank you so much for the information of the compounded creams you are using; now all I have to do is find a Compounding Pharmacist and Dr. who will work with me on this.
Thanks again,
Sherrie

FYI- I've always gotten my bio-identical hormones in cream or gel form, to apply topically to the skin. That way, if my symptoms seem to dictate needing more, or less, I can adjust the dosage myself. I feel that would be difficult to do if taking capsules orally, even though it's easier to just pop a pill vs applying to the skin and letting it dry/soak in. However, it usually only takes me about 5 minutes to apply my creams/gels and wait they've perked into my skin. I alternate putting them on my inner upper arms and inner thighs. It's quick and easy, just a little more hassle than capsules, but again, it gives me the ability to control what I need better. Might be an option to consider as you're going through the tweaking phase...
Does anyone know of a physician who practices BHRT in Jacksonville,Florida?
christian MD, personal doctor to many preachers, Dr Don Colbert MD is in Jacksonville FL
I have a great doctor!

I just read your comments. I went through the same things. Do yourself a HUGE favor and find a doctor who believes in bio-identical hormones. You'll be glad you did!
how can i fnd a Doctor in Maine who also does this? sounds like a much needed product for us 'MIDDLE" AGE LADIES . thanks for the reply. sandra
Hi! I know of a great website and an office in Yarmouth, Maine.
www.womentowomen.com

Their website is very helpful...lots of information about hormones.

Is there a specific book by Dr. Zava that helped? or did you go see him personally?
thanks!

Dear Jane, Whatever you do , don't give up. If we don't fight for ourselves and listen to our own bodies, no one else will!
I'm with you about having periods again. Don't miss it, don't need it! If I live to be 80, I will still be doing my Bios. I can't imagine being without them.
Cland,
I have been taking bio-identicals since January 2008.
I am right there with you.
The best way to find a doctor is to go onto the website that lets you find a compounding pharmacist. The pharmacist in your area can recommend a doctor who handles this. Thats how I found mine.
Go to:
www.iacprx.org
I am getting ready to get my bloodwork done next Monday to see where Im at and go from there with the bioidenticals. I am excited and have been since reading Suzanne Somers new book Breakthrough in which she discusses bioidenticals with many various doctors and it all sounds good to me! Very informative if you want more answers. I'll update when Im on them to let you know what I think of them!
I have read her books as well, but I haven't the latest. Also Dr. Phil's wife, Robin does the bios and was recently on Oprah as well as Suzanne. You can go to oprah.com and check out the latest. Good luck!
Do you know a doctor near the Tampa area that does this?
