Under Active Thyroid

I am taking Armours Thyriod -120 mg. Iwas taking 150 and after blood tests they lowered dose to 120. I also have chronic megaloblastic anemia. I am taking B-12 every day. 2000mcg. They say I don't need b12 shots. But Iam very weak, tired ,no energy, etc. janek373@wmconnect.com

I am taking Thyroxine tablets for under active thyroid but what else can I do to feel well. I still feel tired and down.

I once had problems with tireness and my doctor would always tell me my thyroid tests were o.k. Finally, he asked me if anyone complained of my snoring. I told him yes--my kids complained and were often scared when they didn't hear anything for a while. It turned out that I had Sleep Abnea. When I went to the sleep clinic--I could not believe how good I felt when I work up--well rested.

In addition, I had a total hysterectomy--I was loosing a lot of blood before the sugery and had to talk prescribed iron pills after sugery. I felt like the doctor took my brains as well. Could NOT think past my nose for a long time. I found out that iron could throw the thyroid off. Needless to say. No MORE IRON was taken.

Finally, at age 53-I need supplements to help me.
Hope this helps.

I too am an under active thyroid patient with daily medication. I also am taking Memopause Support but would like to know how can a low thyroid person can loose weight? I've been trying for years. Please advise. Thanks!

I have an under active thyroid and the weight just kept coming on no matter what I did. I didn't know what to eat anymore, or how much was enough. I have lost 13 pounds in one month. I started on the Jenny Craig Plan, just to see how I was to eat, and found the key to my weight loss. I have been eating regular food, feel great, not tired, and not hungrey. I do eat 6 small meals a day and my joy is back. Their plan is pretty normal, no bars, pills, drinks, just good food.

I answered this on 4th April 2009. Since then i have lost two stone by following a healthy eating plan.I feel much better with less aches and pains. I still have two more stone to loose ,but I am on a journey to being healthy. So YES you can loose weight with an under active thyroid. Hope this will help anyone who is struggling with their weight. With an under active thyriod the weight seems to go on quicker than trying to take it off. I beleive you can loose weight but for me it has meant joining a slimming class and attending each week.Other than that finding a healthy eating plan to suit your needs.A plan that is set out for you is better because it should contain all the necessary foods you body needs. I find I seem to put on extra weight with this thyroid problem. I have joined Slimming World as I live in the uk. I need to loose at least four stone, as I am feeling quite ill at the moment with aches and pains etc. If you would like to keep in touch we can encourage each other. Hope this has helped. But YES you can loose weight. Cazza.

Armour Thyroid! It is not synthetic, it's natural, and you will feel the difference in about a week! Also, make sure your doctor is a thyroid specialist. Regular medical doctors dont usually do all the tests that need to be run.

I am in the same situation and am also interested in more input in this area. I have read that eating soy and peanut products is not good for an underactive thyroid. I take Menopause Support which I believe includes soy supplement. Is what is good for one problem not good for the other?

Joanne,

I have been taking Armour thyroid since 2004. What I have been informed of on soy is this:

It is not good for the thyroid. I was a vegetarian and ate all things soy. So, then I went to only having a soy latte in the morning. But now I am told that you must wait 3 hours between medicine and soy products or it blocks your medicine. I also had a Vitamin D deficiency. So, I took my D with my calcium...I was informed by my pharmacist of the following. Do not take calcium supplements or anything with calcium within 4-6 hours of taking med as it binds the thyroid med. The soy in itself is bad for the thyroid with or without the medication. Also, things with salicylates such as Pepto-Bismol you must use the 4-6 hours rule and that I can not take allergy medicines with anti-histamines, period. In other words, you should talk to your doctor because there are MANY things that you can and can not take or consume while on thyroid medication. I have not heard anything about peanuts so I guess I will go to my doctor the next time with this question. Someone in the medical field should research all of this and post it for all to read. I seem to learn more and more as the years go by. The best advice is to listen to your doctor and pharmacist and you can ask them about the information for your lifestyle. Hopes this helps.

I also am on Armour Thyroid. However, I called the Pharmacist and she said that there is no problem taking anti-histamines (such as Astepro) or nasal Cortico-steroids (such as Omnaris) with Armour Thyroid. Hope this helps.
