Dr. Cherry on KCEO 4/8/10 - Summary

Often, there are diseases or health problems that are detected in the early development stage, but instead of waiting to see how they develop, there are proactive steps we can take to intervene. We need to take an active role in protecting our health. I use integrative medicine – natural substances, sometime combined with prescription medicines integrated together to give what patient needs. After all, 57% of medications are derived from natural substances!

Topic 1: Eye-related Diseases (Minute 1:45)
There are two different common eye diseases that account for the majority of eye problems – one affects the front of the eye, the other the back of the eye.

1. Retinal diseases such as macular degeneration are the leading cause of blindness and is characterized by the loss of central vision
2. Cataracts are the number one cause of vision loss of people over age 65 and cause cloudiness over the eye

There are natural substances that help protect and support the eye – protecting against the development of these diseases or helping to slow down or halt their progress.
• Bilberry – classic supplement that helps with macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, night blindness, early cataracts
• Lutein – A carotenoid that acts as a natural sunblock, protecting against cataract and MD and eye damage
• Eyebright – protects against oversensitivity to light
• Glutathione – keeps lens of eye pliable
• Alpha-lipoic acid – universal antioxidant that regenerates all the other antioxidants in the body
• Lycopene – show to decrease macular degeneration and reduce cataracts
• Quercitin – a flavonoid that decreases retinopathy and inflammation in eye

My Vision Support contains all of these and additional ingredients to help you protect your eyesight.
Sunglasses are another good way to protect your eyes from sun damage.

Topic 2: Green Tea’s Benefits (Minute 23)
1. Weight Loss - Tufts University Research on Aging found one substance that keeps coming up as beneficial to weight loss is green tea. The study found that those who consumed the green tea had twice the weight loss, specifically in the abdominal region. Diabetes is just one of the dangerous complications of obesity and excess abdominal fat.
2. Breast Cancer - Another study found that drinking green tea may reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Green tea can be brewed and consumed, or also taken in a capsule or extract form.

Topic 3: Prostate (Minute 30:30)
60% of men over age of 60 have enlargement in the prostate, or BPH. Symptoms include a frequent or urgent need to urinate; interrupted sleep due to repeated nighttime urination; difficulty beginning urination or maintaining a stream; straining, pain or burning during urination; dribbling at the end of urination; and inability to completely empty the bladder.

There are prescription medications that reduce the prostate tissue with the ingredient 5-alpha reductase – however the medications do have side effects. But there are natural substances that can do this naturally, without the side effects:
• Saw palmetto – contains 5-alpha reductase and has been used for centuries for prostate problems
• Pygeum – combined with saw palmetto, gives an even quicker effect and is also an inflammatory
• Beta sitosterol – also contains 5-alpha reductase
• Nettle root powder – also decreases prostate inflammation

These do take a little longer to take effect, so often I have people start on the natural substances while they are taking the prescriptions and then gradually take them off as the natural takes over. We have a Prostate Support product that has these and other natural ingredients to help support the prostate.

Topic 4: Digestive Problems (Minute 44:45)

Acid blockers are some of the most prescribed medications, but as we age, our bodies naturally produce less stomach acids. Instead, there are ways to naturally aid our digestive system. My program, Digestion Support, combines essential enzymes and other ingredients that help with absorption:
• Digestive enzymes amylase, protease and lipase – break down fats, carbohydrates and proteins
• Glucomannan – soluble fiber that also helps lower cholesterol, regulate blood sugar
