Vitamin C, blood pressure, and young women

High intakes of vitamin C may protect against blood pressure increases in young women, according to a recent study in the Nutrition Journal.

“Lowering BP (blood pressure) or attenuating increases in BP in healthy young adults may lead to lower BP in older adults and reduced risk of age-associated vascular events,” wrote the researchers from the University of California, Berkeley. “This study suggests that vitamin C may be an important factor in BP regulation even among healthy young adults, and that further study is warranted.”

The study is the first to report a relationship between blood vitamin C levels and blood pressure in young women with normal blood pressure.

Vitamin C can be found in citrus, berries and green vegetables, but supplementation is often needed to reach optimal levels. It is an important antioxidant needed for proper immune function, collagen synthesis and cardiovascular health.

Because of its many functions, Vitamin C has been included in the formulations for Basic Nutrient Support and Bone Support as well as Immunity Support, Joint Support and Vision Support.
